Edelweiss

Broadway Break#6

Tune to:  "Edelweiss"

Bad advice??
 Rad.. advice??
Every morning I hear it..
watch the news??
More confused!
Is "this" bad??  Should I fear "it?"

Pros.. who are telling us:
"Wear a mask! Just don't ask..us how... to!"
Roll the dice?
 Don't think twice!..
Don't know who to kowtow to!
**********
Will there be
more T.P.?
Will there be any chic-ken?
Can I buy?
Some hair dye?
Will.. my mustache hairs thicken?

Tell me, love..should I wear a glove?
Mazel tov!!..I'm addled!!
Will they sell?
 More Purell?
I'm not ready for battle!!
**********

Are these shelves
stocked by elves?
Will I find any "VIVA?"
Just take ONE???!! That's no fun!
(Now..I feel like a diva!)

I can wait:
and anticipate..
with a four-leaf clover

I'll hang tight.
.I'll still write..
(Wake me up when it's over!)

O my beautiful cousins

Broadway Break #5

Sung to the tune of "O, What a Beautiful Mornin'"

(From "Oklahoma!".which means I still get to thank Richard Rodgers for the music)

O, what a tedious morning
I NEED this brain exercise
to deal with medias' warnings
to heal from  Donald Trump's lies

Everybody I know.. has been writing
it can soften the blow..keeps 'ya fighting
express all those feelings..keep nothing inside
'cause everyone's reeling on this scary ride!

Many bright writers inspire me
flooding Face-book with their thoughts
it's just like keeping a diary...
let's not get too overwrought

I found solace on ZOOM with my cousins
as they came to the room by the dozens
'though some were perplexed about glitches and woes
a speaker didn't work or a screen image froze..

it was so lovely to gather
hearing what each had to say
but, I'll admit, I would rather...
see 'em at WOODLOCH one day!:)

there is hope..I can see the horizon
as we cope with this new socializin'
accept this new  normal..agree that it sucks..
there won't be that formal.so hang up the tux:(

Cry..eat some pie!..tell some jokes, folks!
do what you must to get by..
we'll weather this storm together..
everyone has to comply,
 I...
want to see y'all in July!

Erin go bra-less

Broadway Break #4 "Erin Go Bra-less"

Sung to the tune of:  "I Am Sixteen"

How great, little girls!
You are free at last
unleashed from that dreaded..binding
My bra's in the drawer
and that means you're
as free as a bird (who's) unwinding!
I'm finding.....

My brassiere's not needed here
we're under a quarantine
those happy pups
are freed from the cups
who cares?? 'Cause I won't be seen...

It's no shocker
that these knockers
love their new freedom, they're
out in the open!
this pair is hopin'
to feel that breezy air!

totally free! and hangin' they
no longer are confined
got the OK to swing and sway
(While I just lose my mind!)

Liberating!
TIT-illating!
I'm feelin' kinda law-less..
also..flawless..goin' braless!
C-cups! and D-cups! unite!

The sound of flushing

Broadway Break #3
(Tune to:  "The Sound of Music")
"Ode to a Bidet"

My day in the house
is starting to get..to me
is there a beach house
for someone to let..to me?
but deep in this warped brain's shadow
I KNOW there's no beach house today:(
I'm grateful to YOU, Rachel Maddow!
but I have found
I love the sound
of my new..bi-det!!

My bathroom's alive!
With the sound of spraying!
I don't have to drive
to retrieve T.P!
I know we'll survive
With dumb luck!..(and praying!)
I won't give a f*ck when I have..to..pee!

When one finger hits
I am spritzed and done
I am whis-tle..clean
I don't have a care
like a Charmin Bear
(and.......it's kind...of...fun!)
I don't buy the hype
(there's no NEED to wipe!)
as life just...goes..on..
and gee!..Lucky me!
who goes on the por-ce-lain john!

I go to the loo!
When I get the urge to..
there's no need to splurge..
at the TP store!
my ears are so blessed..
with the sound of flushing..
I'm crushing..
This chore!

How do you solve a problem like corona

Here's today's Broadway parody, tune to "How do you Solve a Problem Like Maria?"

Jim's always late for dinner and sees nothing wrong with that
He's always getting thinner while the rest of us get fat(ter)
I hate to have to say this..but resentment's brewing here
Despite this sh*t--he's staying fit!!
Who's jealous??

My fella's always snacking on a crunchy thing to nosh
his hygiene's never lacking and his hands are always washed
his outlook is so rosy!
I suppose he has a point
he's still employed!!
I'm paranoid!
and freaking!
I'm envious..let's thank my better half
'cause he still..makes me laugh!!

How do you solve a problem like Corona?
it's driving everyone here quite insane!
New cases found... in  burgs  in Ariz-ona!
Nebraska! Alaska! Even small towns ..in Maine...!

I'm losing my mind..I'm so confined... enduring
these boring days we gotta tolerate!
a sentence without a crime..
resent this! We're doin' time!
oh folks, I fear that I'm
not doing great...
Oh, how do you solve a problem like Corona?
Not much to do..just muddle  through and wait!

Spoken:

As I'm shouting "it's not fair!"
As I'm pouting:  "More root hair??"
all those nasty strays that pop up on my chin..
Yes, I realize I can pluck 'em
or give up and just say f*ck 'em!
oh Corona...that's enough of this damn scare!

Sung:

yes, how do you solve a problem like Corona?
How do we slay the beast we didn't deserve?
oh how do we quaratine?
while keepin' the homestead clean?
is it forseen?..We'll flatten that damn curve???
Oh..let us remember this plague in November..
when we elect..someone..who's fit..to serve!

Start the world I want to get on

Does anyone remember the Broadway musical, "Stop the World, I Want to Get Off" with lyrics by Leslie Bricusse?

I used to think it was porn..it is not.

Nevertheless, I'd like to see a revival, especially when Anthony Newley warbles his signature song, "What Kind of Fool Am I?"

Only I envision his part to be played by a spring breaker who went to the crowded beach, and the song will be belted out from his bed in the ICU.

Or..maybe I'll write a brand new version.

I'm thinking of calling it, "Start the World..I Want to Get On!"

I'd even be willing to put on a bra

Silver linings quarantine book

Latest News From the  Karen  Amster Silver Linings Playbook:

I have not worn a bra since Friday the 13th!

How lucky am I?

I may be confined, but my droopy old girls are not.

.Yay, me!!

This should have been a weekend (for so many) for schmoozin! Boozin'!  Cruisin'!. Snoozin'!

(I'm changing my name to Susan)

And...

It's a beautiful day in the neighborhood..because my back spasms have subsided considerably!

I will NOT be an Oxy addict!

I WILL continue to be a butter addict!

I WILL  need to find a salsa rehab center once this disaster is behind us.

(don't judge..y'all are gonna get fat too..and realize there are WORSE things  than that..like ....a friggin' global epidemic!)

Cheers to reduced back pain!

Jeers to the  ass pain.

It's the same pain-in-the ass we're all feeling.

A big fat a-hole named mother f*cking CORONA!

Was it really THREE weeks ago that we named a stray cat that, while sipping iced coffee in the beautiful island of Antigua?

When I couldn't spend ENOUGH time with Jim?
Where the biggest catastrophe was some excess seaweed?

I know people have it worse than us..WAY worse.

I think of all those people who have no income and may be homeless, but they can't be put on the street because the streets would be infected and crowded, and they can't go to shelters because you're not social distancing when you're stealing the shoes from a person in the cot next to yours.

OK..time for a scream break:

AAAAAAAAAAAAArgh!

And stop, nit-pickers, I'm spelling phonetically.

I really need to count my blessings.

I have my health(until the Flexol wears off) my wits about me(although some would call me contrived) my husband, son, dog, bidet..

I just have to bide-t my time and realize it's not the end of the world.

It just..isn't..

My quarantined things

Broadway Song Break!

I will invite you  all into my bed, while the thunder roars, and I'll make  you all play clothes out of my drapes if you just sing along.

Watching Bad Trump with my family..and cringing..
we SHOULD be watching a series worth bingeing
snapping like turtles..we've frayed every nerve
this is a sentence we did NOT deserve..!
Listenin' to woes 'bout the shortage of Charmin
We got a HOSE--so it's not too alarmin'
Nuking leftovers..and lookin' for fun..
we just all want this bad dream to be done!
When you're cryin'
feel like dyin'
your own "Family Feud!"
let's try not to snap..
while enduring this crap..
if it doesn't end..we're screwed!

Dedicated to two of my favorite things..er..people..Evan and Jim!

Thanks for putting up with me

Virtual scavenger hunt

Ninety minutes or so ago, I was ready to throw in the towel.

Between my back spasms(and KNOWING I can't do anything about them in this crisis when sick folks have far worse problems) and Luke hacking like he's got a three-pack-a-day cigarette habit and NJ Governor Phil Murphy's doomsday speech, I just wanted to crawl into a hole.

Couple that with I SHOULD be at Woodloch, with the "Survivor" castaways, and maybe some Oxy for the spasms.

But..when you can't  go to Woodloch, Woodloch comes to you!!

In the form of "Woodloch-at-Home's Scavenger Hunt."

The three of us laughed a lot with this awesome distraction, running around the house, finding and photographing  items and solving puzzles..the Woodloch way!

( of course, only Evan and Jim did the actual running)

One challenge was to write a song about what is was like to be trapped inside.

I'm not sharing the video Jim took of me braless, with gray roots and an unwaxed brow and a heating pad, but I'll share my lyrics, written to "Comin' 'Round the Mountain"

"We were all supposed to take that happy drive
to see Tommy Sheehan..and friends who "Survived"
I would sing like Miley Cyrus
If it weren't for this damn VIRUS!
But i guess it has inspired us...
we're alive!!

We're all goin' crazy..'cause we're trapped inside..
Jim got lazy..Evan cursed..I, Karen, cried..!!
but this helped the time pass faster
we're surviving this disaster!
I am still the lyric master..
said with pride!

When this is over, go to Woodloch!  With your family! For a REAL Scavenger Hunt! They need your bookings..they need to stay open..forever..

Because it they could turn a catastrophe into fifty-five minutes of pure joy, they deserve a medal--like the coveted ones  that they give out for every game!

Drive by vet

today was my cleaning woman's last day until further notice.

  I can't get waxed, I can't get clean, I can't get in a better mood.

She LOVES Luke and he LOVES her, but when she tried to pick him up today, he was in so much pain that he practically bit her.  We've noticed the pain for like two weeks now....he can't jump onto the bed anymore, but we were so grateful to have untorn sheets and quilts and comforters that we thought he'd be OK eventually.

.I finally had to call the vet..Evan took him and had to wait in the parking lot to get results... on his phone.

It's not too serious..just pretty bad arthritis--and he's happily taking his crushed up pills in ice cream and peanut butter.

I'm hoping Jim crushes one up and puts it in my ice cream to help the back spasms.

But it's the IDEA that my DOG had to go to the vet and his OWNER had to wait in the car...!!

It's usually the DOG that waits in the car while the PERSON goes inside to do what they have to do...

This is our world now.

I miss the old one

Summer of 2042

Writing helps.
Advil and ice cream help.
Humor helps.
Memes help, even the morbid, doomsday ones.
ESPECIALLY the morbid doomsday ones, and if you're not a fan of raw, black humor, scroll on, because I'm about to unleash some Category Five Karenoia.

This is how it was supposed to go:

Or how I, Karen,  was supposed to GO:

In the summer, of 2042.  I'd be eighty-two, and I picked that year as a tribute to "Summer of '42" so I could tell you a story about that movie.

When I was the assistant editor of my high school newspaper(which means I had no power, say, or talent) the editor-in-chief and I were invited to a screening of the wonderful wartime film.

We were supposed to have a Q&A session with the stars, Gary Grimes and Jerry Hauser in the semi darkened theater afterward.

Mine turned into  more of a T&A--well..the "T" during a make-out session with Jerry Hauser.  (And no, for those who recall the movie, there was no trick with the popcorn bucket. )

So there was my idiot-16-year-old self, going to second base with Oscy..was that his character's name?  I think so, and I'm on too much of a roll to  stop and google..Jerry was Oscy..Gary was Hermie, who lost his V-card to Jennifer O'Neill.

All I could think of was "your friends will be impressed but don't tell your Mom about this over-the-bra action!"..and..I'm glad the editor in chief and I went to a PUBLIC high school, because the private school girls locked themselves in a room with these two goons. And everyone left unzipped.

Anyway, let me leave my confessional and get back to my morbid reality:

It was supposed to be  2042, and my memorial service would be a small, intimate gathering in a venue maybe the equivalent of Windsor Castle.

People would speak, people would laugh, people would share memories like "remember Crazy Karen and  that one time she penned a semi-obituary during the pandemic of 2020?"

Another would say, "remember that time in Woodloch?"

Still another would say, "remember, that one time, at band camp..?"

My flattering photos would be displayed(make that photo-not plural---my HS graduation picture, taken before or after I was felt up by Oscy--I can't recall)

"You Are Karen" would be on a constant loop with the entire score from "Out of Africa."

Although I'd probably have it in writing that I didn't want anything too religious in the ceremony(since my ashes were going to be scattered in Lake Teedyuskung anyway, which meant I was going to hell) I would allow the Mourner's Kaddish, because it would comfort my surviving loved ones..

I was suppose to go on MY TERMS...whoever spoke first would say, "Karen Amster sure liked her marbled rib eyes..and bless her heart, it took them  eighty two effin' years to do her in!"

It was supposed to be a party for me..a party of irreverent memories shared by loved ones..and maybe  some trivia games afterwards, like identifying TV theme songs.

There'd be great food served on mini trays brought by waiters who looked like Ethan Hawke from the "Before" trilogy or Jimmy Kimmel.

It would NOT be sad or tragic or unfair.

It would NOT be before my time!

But it WILL be if they don't put a stop to this shit..and SOON!

None of us want the world to end..not like this..

After the dust settles

Ok..nap's done.

 Fretting's done...either shortly or never, I can't decide yet.

  Solitaire Scrabble is done.

 Saving TV for tonight.

And yet..I still despair.  I feel imprisoned for a crime I did not commit; I feel isolated and overwhelmed with sadness over all the things that are cancelled or soon will be cancelled.

I find solace in my husband, son, and bidet, but it also got me thinking, and you can share this with as many fellow inmates as you want, I don't even want or need credit.

One of my biggest concerns is not just about the global health threat, but how the economy will take a mafia hit that it might not recover from.

So I was thinking, instead of just concentrating on GOM (Germ of Mouth) let's start thinking about WOM. (Word of Mouth)

Okay, you know I'm obsessed with acronyms, so let me elaborate.

I know so many businesses that are shut down or operating at a lesser capacity.  I'm sure you do too.

So why not help them get back on their feet?  Why not share some of our favorites that will need our business once the crisis is behind us?

I'll start...

Missing your local live  theater??

Please check out New Jersey Repertory Theater in Long Branch, NJ.  They're closed for a few weeks but they've offered us countless hours of entertainment with their original theatrical productions. They'll be back..please check them out.

Missing your local movie house?  I'm not sure if they're closed or not (people are avoiding cinemas en mass), but check out the ShowRoom in  Asbury Park. They offer quality art-house films in comfortable chairs with an unparallelled concession stand. Once its safe to sell the maximum amount of tickets, this is where you want to be.

Want a well-deserved vacation when this nightmare ends?

Please consider Cherry Travel in Matawan, NJ.  So many cruises and Disney trips are being cancelled, during this popular spring break period, so please..when we're back on our feet, let Christine put sandals on yours and plan your  perfect trip.

Bushy brows??  If yours are like mine, let's hope we return to normalcy as soon as possible and visit Nails Limited in Aberdeen NJ.  The brows can be handled now..but I really miss the lip service.

Missing personalized gifts for special occasions?  Let me now self-promote and recommend Salutations Singing Telegram Company..when your door knobs shine, so will the talented singers in my company!

I can't personally recommend any Broadway theaters or sports arenas, but I will recommend that you go go GO to them..as so as its safe to do so.

Let's kill the virus and our collective boredom.

Please share places you can recommend once it's safe to stimulate the economy.

We'll need them..and they'll need our support.

Wax on wax off

This shit  just got way too real...I feel like the world has flipped off of its axis.  Nothing makes sense.

For the past 10 years or so, I have spent Fridays the same way:

My cleaning woman comes, I go for a waxing, and then grab a slice of pizza or two.

I SOOOOOooooo appreciate my housekeeper, and not because I'm too lazy to dust and vacuum.  Well..I AM..sort of..and I know some of you think I'm a spoiled, lazy, prima donna, which is...true..sorta...but my cleaning woman does an outstanding job, much better than I could ever do.

You could bounce coins off the sheets she pulls so tight; she makes glass doors shine.

And besides, we all love her and have always treated her with great affection and respect, giving her odd jobs whenever we can.

I was so happy to see her today that I wanted to kiss her!  And she works with so much disinfectant that I probably would have been fine and purified!

I take the short drive to my waxing place, and it's a ghost town.  The few people that are there are covered with masks.

I was told I could not get my lips waxed until further notice, and all I could think of is, "great..my corpse will be unidentifiable in two months because I'll have so much facial hair that a team of experts will not be able to accurately predict my gender."

I tried to go to two other places in the same strip mall, and nobody could strip those unwanted hairs.  And one is a European Wax House that specializes in this!

Fine, I thought..I'll wash my hands and grab a slice of pizza.

It  was thirty minutes before the usual lunch crowd and again, a ghost town. I asked if the TV channel could be changed from some boring sci-fi movie to the news.

The owner tells me they're going "media-free" and he could not put on the news.  I answer, "well..what about "The View?"  That's got another thirty minutes to go and he replies"and what do you think they'll be talking about today?"

So I sat there, trying to self-sooth and wondering if pizza crust was contagious. This place usually only shows Fox news anyway, although I recall watching Obama's inauguration here.

Customers started trickling in, discussing how every single local supermarket was out of chicken, meat, bread. toilet paper.

Someone said that there was still plenty of "ketchup" which made me feel better, since Ronald Reagan convinced me it is a legitimate vegetable.

I have my family, my dog, my Alexa, my bidet(s), canned soup, and unwanted bushy brows.

I better learn to count my blessings while I can.

Gaze into my crystal ball

No Karen Amster travelogue would be complete without sharing an airport misadventure, and this trip was no exception.

It started off as the least chaotic check in we've ever head in the Caribbean.

A few simple questions were answered.

(No..we haven't visited Iran in the last six months..ask us the same question ten or twenty years from now and you'll get the same answer)

I remember one time, in Turks and Caicos, I think, when the departure line was so long that I considered applying for a visa and seeking permanent employment..I'm sure the island needs someone to pen personalized show tunes for special occasions, right?

But today's departure promised to be quick and stress free.

Only one other idiot besides me forgot to pack socks and or sandals, so barefoot I stood, loading up my tray of belongings onto a roller.

Jim is not too far behind me when he says, alarmingly, "Something's wrong..they're keeping your bags."

My "bags" were my every day, 80 pound Jessica Simpson handbag, and a plush tie-dyed tote bag with drawstrings from Woodloch that I live in, practically.

I'm getting a little nervous..all the Woodloch bag contained, or so I thought,  was  a bunch of dead  pens and my blogging notes that were random and haphazard, so much so that I thought I inadvertently arranged them into some kind of code that would suggest I'm affiliated with a terrorist group.

Maybe the bag had a hair brush?  Underwear?

The TSA agent removes a bottle of sunscreen that I had forgotten to pack into the checked-in luggage, which she proceeded to put into a bin of other confiscated items.

Mystery solved.

Was it though??  Was it??

She takes my Jessica Simpson bag into there back and I'm freaking out, because my wallet contained $200.00 and more important, my TWEEZERS!

The handbag was fine, the problem seem to lie deep within the mysterious crevices of the Woodloch tote bag.

I swear on everything holy, she looks at Jim and I and asks:

"Do you have a crystal ball?"

My eyes said, "WTF???"

My brain said, "no..do YOU?? I'm guessing you don't because you'd know for certain that I DO NOT have one in the bag."

My mouth said:  "um..no????"

She called in reinforcement, and now two TSA members with elongated nails are pawing through malfunctioning pens and again, one of them asks:  "Do you have a crystal ball?"

My brain answered:  "If I DID, don't you think I'd be at the race track instead of this line? Don't you think I'd be asking it for the exact location of my favorite tube of lipstick that disappeared under the vanity sink in room 7101, Sandals Antigua, resort?"

The agent insists there is something heavy inside that bag.

The tote has no compartments, and trust me, that has proven problematic with key cards and cell phones before.

I was really starting to doubt myself.

You know how when you check in, someone will always ask you if you ever left your bags unattended, and you always say no?

I started thinking about yesterday at the beach, and  the peddler with his attache filled with cheap silver necklaces, and how he chastised me for thinking the brown bobbing and weaving oblong was could be anything but seaweed.

Did he slip something in, maybe sewed a crystal ball into the lining because I proved him wrong when the dry photographer got wet and told us it was neither seaweed or stingray, it was a buoy with which  to anchor a boat?

After an eternity, the first agent grasps her thin fingers onto a piece of ribbon with patriotic colors that was attached to a long forgotten and somewhat heavy silver medallion  that I won at a Woodloch Scavenger Hunt one year.

If I possessed a crystal ball, I would have figured out a way to capture the gold.

Thanks once again for all the people who read my blogs..and still like and respect me.

It was a really wonderful--and much needed--vacation.

Lather.. Rinse.. Repeat..

Lather.
Rinse.
Repeat.

Which I did, with sunscreen, sea, and serenity.

How does anyone decide it is OK to let me out of my cage?

The day started off like it always does, with Jim in the gym and me in the last minutes of slumber, and then off to our pool chairs, which Jim reserved hours before, for our last full day in the beautiful island of Antigua.

We met up with our literal neighbors again, the ones who have a son who is good friends with Connor Clifton of the Boston Bruins, the very same NHLer who went to elementary school and played soccer with Evan.

We signed up for  another Aqua-Gym class, which is actually fun, even 'though I always cheat just enough so nobody notices. I can fake a wave like nobody's business.

This was followed by a round of "Jeopardy!" in the pool. near the swim-up bar,  but it was  just a handful of trivia questions about Sandals resorts and things that nobody would know anything about.

Some questions were easy.  ("What state is nicknamed the "Volunteer" State?")

Some..more difficult, like "who invented the bikini?" and "how many bones are there in the human body?"

And then came the really difficult ones, which I thought I heard but probably not outside of my own head.

Like:

"Will Karen  ever retrieve her favorite tube of lipstick that fell under the enclosed vanity sink?" or..did the presence of these adorable kittens actually turn her from a feline foe to a feline fan who finds sharing space with them to be kind of..CAThartic?"

Lunch was Asian-fusion: the  view took my breath away.

We leave the restaurant and find two beach lounges..very covered real estate.

Jim volunteered to take the twenty-minute round trip back to the pool to fetch our belongings, and Karenoia decided to attack me with a vengeance.

I'm alone, and the roped in area in my view is deserted, when I suddenly see a brown, flat, oblong bobbing and weaving in the surf.

There were no visible fins, so I knew it wasn't likely to be a shark, but I was convinced that it was a creature of the stingray family--the deadly kind.

I am hot and desperate for a dip, but I was also "hearing" my eulogy, and "hearing" whoever was giving it trying to be delicate and skirting the issue of a sea creature  fatality.

A woman walks by with a tray of drinks, and tells me I'd have to walk to the opposite end of the resort and find a staff member of the water sports' team if I was concerned.

A peddler who knew he wasn't going to get anywhere with me and a silver bracelet  display was almost harsh, calling the bobbing blob "seaweed..what else could it possibly be?"

A Sandals photographer finally sees my desperation, wades out in his dry shorts and dry camera, and comes back to my chair and says:

"It's the anchor for the boat.  Don't you see it passing by?"

Of course I see it.

I just didn't  think about the fact that boats have anchors.

Which is why I need  to be crated or caged.

Jim comes back with 100 pounds of our gear and we meet a Newfoundlander who took four days to get here. so..don't let me complain about the direct route from Newark airport, that got us here just after lunchtime on the morning we left.

The guy sounded Scottish, and had the ruddy complexion and rough hands of someone who works in the oil industry., which he does.

He pronounced "kelp" as "kal-lop" and I could only hope the man will never have to call for "help" one day.

I felt sorry for him, wondering how lonely his life must be on an oil rig, when he's joined by a dozen Canucks, all with bottles of amber liquid in their hands.  They were singing, the were circling, they were frolicking like a bunch of octogenarians.  They swigged their beers in unison and I said to Jim, because I'm such a nerd, "we must be at a sand bar."

I went back to my ideal parking spot for a well deserved nap. my Kindle(the enjoyable "Summer of 1969") and some conversation with my better half while sipping a cold lemonade that tasted extra good.

It was then one last carefree romp in the sea, where the buoys are.

I have just a touch of the end-of-vacation blues, but they'll go away once I'm enjoying my Surf n Turf candle lit dinner..and a chocolate  and martini farewell party after.

There will be an award presented to the best dressed couple in white, but in order to enter, I'd have to show up in just a bra...the only white apparel I packed.

See you in New Jersey!

Who is Harvey Weinstein?

Bitchy, obnoxious Karen got plenty of sleep and had plenty of weird dreams in her  very high bed, so today she's going to be as sweet as key lime pie  from now on.

Wanna bet??

The schedule looks interesting.  There's a "Name that Slogan" game but I ignore most commercials.

There's a "Flip Your Cup" game scheduled for the pool.

Does that mean all the size 34-B's from last night's Newlywed /LoversGame want to try on my suit?

Because you know I'd absolutely let them do it.

There's also "Pool Jeopardy" scheduled early, after the aqua-gym.

If the questions/answers are anything like last night's from the Newlywed /LoversGame, they'd go something like this:

"Pick a category."

"Numbers??"

The answer is:  "Zero"

"What is."the dress size of all the contestants on this panel?"

"Sorry..that's incorrect."

"What is..Karen's tolerance level for games that ask things like, "if you could make any part of your husband's body bigger, what  part would it be?"

"That is correct..chose another category"

"I'll take "WTF?" for $100.00, please..

The answer is: "The panelist last night demonstrated  violently aggressive thrusting motions to his wife calling it "making sweet love"  in honor of what nationally known celeb?"

"Who is Harvey Weinstein?"

"Correct..and if you're a regular reader of Karen Amster's blog, we would have accepted "Luke with a pile of twisted bed sheets."

I'll take "Desperate" for $300.00, please?

"The answer is.."these three are no longer considered humorous in a civilized world?"

"What are..Tulsi's  refusal to quit the presidential race, communicable diseases, and Karen's blog?"

"That is correct."

Time to close up shop and begin a day of cheating at water aerobics and other challenging  pool games.

More beach,  more bitching, more book, more basking in the sun.

The newlywed game

Tonight's pre-dinner blog was so short that it could have used a step stool, and since this is the penultimate evening of our stay here, I think I owe people who read my blogs a little more.

Because I am delusional in my belief that people are actually reading anything beyond the first paragraph.

Which I promise you, would be totally OK with me.

I write this blog mainly for myself, to remember details of trips that I probably wouldn't remember otherwise.

Oh, who am I kidding?  I remember the middle names of everyone I went to high school with, I am cursed with a memory that will remember trip details.

The good details.
The bad details.
The ugly details.

I think I write for my future grandchildren..or great nieces and great nephews.

Descendants who may one day question their sanity: branches on my tree who want an explanation for all their quirks.

The blog reveals all.

"Oh..Great Aunt Karen had the same thought patterns..I see..so it's not really my fault, right?"

Tonight's dinner was lovely,  genuine authentic Italian fare, We chatted with another couple from NJ as we waited to be seated, who live a few towns over.  Their first home was in the apartment complex Evan is moving into in a few weeks..it was interesting to compare notes.

Of course, when I saw them at the salad bar seconds  later, I totally mixed them up with a couple who looked nothing like them.

Maybe one day I'll learn to pay attention to my surroundings.

One day..it may be a matter of life and death.

The night entertainment was totally fine..a version of the Newlywed Game that was designed  for millennials in tight clothes.  Folks that drank, rather than ate, their dinners.

Who designs questions like these anyway?

"Gentleman..would your wives describe the night you arrived at this resort as A( boring B) snoring C) scoring?""

Who in their sober mind would answer that?  Everyone is exhausted and jet-lagged on arrival day.  We're lucky if we can work a room key.

The emcee was kind of a dick with the questions he asked the men about their wives..

What is her bra size?  What is her shoe size?

OMG..What about:  "What post would your wife seek in Amy Klobuchar's cabinet in 2024?" or "how many bras did your wife burn in her freshman year at Vassar?"

Sexist, dumb, questions.

And most of the tiny women refused to answer where their favorite place to make whoopee was.

What kind of question is that?

Now if the questions were geared to smart-asses like me, they'd read something like:

What was the worst trait your husband inherited from his mother?

What is the greater threat to your marriage: his pre-occupation with his cell phone or his  falling asleep by
 8:00 PM?

If you gave your husband a hall pass, would you have to find her attractive?

What kind of dorky games would your husband say you insist on playing when you should be taking a jet ski lesson?

You know..things like that.

I could never design questions for The Newlywed Game, nor could I have been a contestant, even when I was a newlywed.

I might have been the first to call a divorce lawyer before the show made it to air.

God bless Jim...he really is a saint.

We listened to some wonderful live music after..decided to forgo karaoke and get some quality sleep.

Gotta do something special for our last full day..I'm open to suggestions:)

Antigua blogette

Blog entry:

Day Five in Paradise:

(See:  Day Four in Paradise for details)

You just watch, I'm STILL gonna get a bunch of "didn't read..too long" comments.

S'ok!

Dinner of fortune

I told Jim it's time for a quickie, so let me write a  two paragraph blog and then let the chips fall where they may.

What a lovely romantic dinner.

We walked along a stone path, under the stars, moon shining brightly, listening to piped in music the entire route.  The Maitre 'D tells us we have the best seat in the house in the Bayside French restaurant.  The moon's reflection lit up the ocean almost electrically, the candlelight was soft, but there was enough glow to see the very appealing menu.

I ordered french onion soup and chateau briand; Jim had chicken cordon bleu.

The atmosphere was intoxicating, the conversation stimulating, and then the reverie was..totally broken.

What dumb luck to be seated right near the bar where smoking was allowed.  I was pissed, and I made a lot of passive aggressive waving motions, but to no avail.

This could have been the perfect romantic evening.

The creme brûlée salvaged it, a little

We tried to get seats for the evening entertainment, at a pavilion juxtaposed to the french restaurant, but they were all taken.

We settled into a cozy little nook with good lighting and overstuffed chairs where we could hear the music, even 'though we couldn't see the stage.

Guess what we found?

A perfectly intact boxed game of "Wheel of Fortune."

One of us k_cked  _ss.

K_cked it b_g t-me.

Maybe I'm getting a little homesick??

I miss Vanna! And Pat! And Alexa!

But I'm not ready to leave shanghai-la.

Not quite yet

Frolicking in Antigua

The "Seinfeld" shows that were about "nothing" were the most controversial, because they were never actually about nothing.

Stealing the set of "The Merv Griffin Show" is not nothing.  A contest revolved around masturbation is not nothing out of the ordinary.

But the writers had a gimmicky premise..if a show within a show was all about the nothingness of the show, would it work? Or be a big pile of nothing?

This is a very round about way of saying this is a blog about nothing.

And yet, everything.

Because nothing especially blog-worthy happened today. Just sun, cheating at water aerobics, a good book, gentle breezes, time to think, time to laugh, time to chill, time to obsess about Super Tuesday results.

It was nothing new, but it was everything because our souls are renewed and our spirits are lifted.  We are so glad to be here.  There's no such thing as a rut in the Caribbean. There's no boredom, no "laundry again?" whines in my head.

We found premium beach chairs today..wonderful  beach real estate,  (Which I  mistakenly referred to yesterday as "beach reality" which also works) and just enjoyed..sitting.  Sitting. Staring. Nothingness.

We got to frolic twice today, and 'though the water had its share of seaweed and was a little cloudier than we like(I wanna see my toes, damn it!") it was still so therapeutic.

Jim is such a sport to play along with yet another dorky Karen game("we can't leave the ocean until we come up with twenty-six one word movie titles with every letter of the alphabet!") and it wasn't as difficult as you'd imagine.

It made us laugh, it made us think, it made us yell at each other when we thought the answer wasn't a legit one, but that is marriage.  The camaraderie, the laughs, the mockery..every union needs a healthy dose of it.

We couldn't find any familiar faces at first..I wanted to see the Movie Game winner from Buffalo whose wife claimed he can recite every word of "Ghost Busters" along with several other movies.

I remember tag lines, and characters names, and..I better stop here, because there are certain  movies I've seen over twenty times, and if I challenge myself to recall every page of dialogue, I'll probably succeed and be here all night.

We ran into Sheena and Chen during our second dip and they were just as lovely and just as much fun as the night we met them.

I love the British way of describing things.  They have a chihuahua mix named Ace Booger, and he sounds as nutty as Luke, but they were in awe over Luke stories that most of you have read a dozen times before.

I loved their reactionS:

"Luke sounds cheeky, doesn't he?"

"He's awfully naughty"

"Chen, did you hear her say that he toilets four times a night?"

Oh loves, I wish I could pull off a British accent as an American, but I'd sound as fake as Madonna.

Brain betrayal

My brain has a mind of its own sometimes, I swear, someone needs to kick some sense into it.

It can be a good thing, like how I saw "Famous Quotes" with just the e,t,and s in the  WOF bonus round.

It is also  the reason I appreciate life's simple things.

(I guess that's not true..a simple thing is watching a butterfly flit by as you're en route to pick up some Doritos for your son,  financially swinging a getaway in paradise is not exactly the same thing but I appreciate both.)

But then my brain gets all warped, like how I told Jim last night we were about to walk through a fine stream of  water from a sprinkler, when it was merely beams from a string of overhead lights.

Or how I've been wearing Skechers since 2016, yet I managed to get my first blister  in as many years last night.

Or..and I wasn't going to confess this but another player from the movie game was comparing his experiences at different resorts, and he was talking about..St. Lucia, I think??

He said the experience is quite different if your room in on the Caribbean side, rather than the Atlantic, and, when we first arrived to THIS resort, the staffer told us there are two parts to Sandals Antigua, the Caribbean and the Mediterranean, where we're staying, and for one fleeting jet lagged moment I forgot where Europe was.

(The same brain fart I had when Jim and I were walking  into the movie "1917" and I asked him what war the movie took place in)

See?  Brain betrayal.

Don't you think I realize how PERVERTED I am when I take a gorgeous film like "Castaway", one of my favorite Tom Hank's films of all times, and see the darkest, ugliest slant just because of a GAME with a white balloon?  A game I wasn't even participating in?

My sick twisted brain implied that Tom Hanks was having an affair with a volleyball.

(Although has anyone seen any unedited version  of the film that could actually disprove this?)

But then this same gray matter acknowledges things that matter, like how happy it is that my  June vacation plans with my family are all set, or how happy I am with Super Tuesday results.

I am not the one who planned this wonderful trip(that credit goes to my extraordinary travel agent, Christine Cherry Hommel, nor am I responsible for the literal solution to my very problematic hair. ((Thank you, Jessica Rupp)

But I guess I have to crow a little here, because it's MY brain that allows me to appreciate the awesomeness of a tropical getaway.

We had a delectable dinner at a reservations only place, and yes, Blue Mountain Coffee Infused Steak tastes as good as it sounds.  So goes pumpkin bisque.  Portions are tiny, which takes away  guilt that I probably wouldn't have if the steak was a big as the guy hoisting himself into the hot tub.

At first I was concerned that Sandals Antigua doesn't have an actual theater, but what they have it better than an enclosed structure that can feel like a sauna.

We sat theater-style, in comfy chairs, and I learned to love Nature more than I already do.  I don't like to sit outside in my my NJ home, even in nicer weather.

I can't see or smell or feel or even taste or hear what I can in Antigua, and I thank my goofy brain for allowing me to drink it all in.

We sat close to the stage in this blissfully smoke-free environment, and watched a talented magician hand out rabbits to the audience and turn milk into water.

There was really no contest in this "Guest Vs. Staff" talent show--only one guest entered, a drummer named Michael who blew everyone away with his thrilling performance of "Wipe Out."

It was mostly staff who did flips and  sexy hot dances and things with fire, who sang like a chorus of angels.

I so love perfect nights..and perfect days..and perfect vacations.

Yeah, even a mind as sick as mine can acknowledge that.

Trivial pursuits

Ah...
It's so nice to be in my happy place. I am such a beach bum--LOL! I love the beach so much that I may take a shot of my toes with my new pedicure in the sand so you can tell how much I love the beach.

I can so get used to this.

OK..now that I have your attention as I write something so bad and cliche ridden that it could have started off with, "it was a dark and stormy night" I'll tell you about my day.

Sorry..I'm getting minimal "likes" and comments  these days so I got a little desperate.

We were told the biggest drawback here is the inadequate amount of desired reality at the beach.  This is true, but we discovered if you claim a coveted parking space at the pool and just go to the beach for the WATER--to swim in the OCEAN--you can pretend there is no beach at all and you won't feel resentful.

I love relaxing vacations for this very reason.  Even if a situation presents itself as potentially stressful, like insufficient beach chairs, one can still get her mellow on.

We actually participated in group activities today, proof positive that we're not just some zhlubs seeking tans, but FUN folk!

We played Bingo, and Jim actually won a prize with the "loser bingo" round, being the last player standing without a number called. His prize was ten points and points can be amassed during your stay, but you need to get something like 100 of them to get a pot holder.  Now I understand why they need your name and room number for so many things--so they can keep track of your points.

If Felicity Huffman gets a mug, I'm going to be really upset with myself for being such a snarky bitch.

I am not the only crazy cat lady here that names the strays.  (That's funny, referring to myself as a cat lady, as I don't particularly like them.  They are mean and snarky, they don't like people, all they care about is food and maybe sleeping, and....I think I understand my issue with them)

The other crazy cat lady named a stray Evel Knievel which I thought was clever.  If we named them according to what they do, the black one would be called  Defied Gravity and the striped one would be Squatting Position.

We had another seaside lunch, enjoying toes in the sand and birds singing overhead, and after, we participated in the Movie Trivia game, which was a lot of fun.

It was basically identifying theme songs from both TV and movies(and man..can ANYONE differentiate "Superman" from "Star Wars?" based on those first couple of notes?  It was the bane of our existing during our Bahamas getaway in 2014--we never lived it down)

There was also some general movie trivia, and everyone was visibly impressed that I knew the exact year "The Godfather" came out(I thought everyone did!) and that I knew the name of the girl from "The Exorcist" off the top of my head.  (Jim thought I responded TOO quickly to that one.  He's worried that I may twist my head around and make the bed shake)

Jim himself got some tough answers, like "Monk" and..and something I forgot, I didn't take notes.

I like small talking with fellow vacationers.  They don't talk about the weather(well, they DO..but in a relatable way) and they don't talk about where they've recently dined..(oh wait..they DO because they're recommending where we should go while we're here)

So maybe I don't hate small talk??

Still not going to care about the ordeal you had returning tea towels to Target, don't tell me about it again.

But we were congregated at a beautiful  lounge area that overlooked the pool for a reason..to bond over pop culture.
To collect  worthless chips that we can't use to redeem anything anyone would care about, but it was fun asking people where they were from, or how annoying their flights were.

I'm not saying I could do this on a daily basis, but yeah, small talk isn't so terrible.

Jim and I got some frolic time..the ocean was GORGEOUS today--beautiful blue but yes, I realize that if we collected it in a styrofoam cup it would be clear, I'm not that stupid.

I just love the FACADE of blue and they really did a good job clearing out the seaweed.

I made up a game as we frolicked--I always do--as I was inspired by the Movie/TV trivia game(which we didn't even win)

I told Jim we couldn't leave the water until we A) were attacked by a wild sea creature B) had to pee--like THAT rule would be enforced!..or C) until we thought of a TV character's last name in alphabetical order using all twenty-six letters in the alphabet..

I started with "Kevin Arnold" and ended with "Dorothy Zbornak" and yep. my pop culture savvy husband got them all right without any assistance from technology.

(Although if I insisted we need to find a character with a last name that started with "X", we'd still be there)

Those Happy Hour revelers ruined my nappy hour, but I have to admit, it was fun to observe them in their natural habitat.

They all decided to play a made-up game in the hot tub(hint:  it had nothing to do with the theme from "The Addams Family") as they tried to enter said tub without using any steps or ladders.

Now, for the Wilma Flintstone-thin wives, this was no problem..they'd just hoist themselves up and roll themselves in.

Their husbands, on the other hand, looked like seared tuna.

I really expected to be an eye-witness to a tragedy, but maybe I'm just jealous that I'm not a party gal.

Off to an elegant dinner and a Guest Vs. Staff talent Show.  I'd enter, but my only talent is being a bitch.

More later..

Beach party.. Antigua!

Happy Super Tuesday!

For those of you with the power to vote today, don't just sit there bidin' your time--make the right choice.

I am as subtle as a sledgehammer..

Who would think that two sturdy squares of wood would be my stairway to heaven?

This was more than a step stool.

A good night sleep..the most satisfying thing in the world, unless your mind is racing and you're on the toilet at 3:42 AM, taking hasty notes that you now have to decipher.

Last night felt tropical and islandesque. Gentle breezes, sounds of crashing waves and clinking glasses. Stars peppering the sky.The small stuff.  The stuff that makes you glad your senses are still intact.

We sampled lots of local fare at the beach BBQ last night, but like all food in an urn, everything tasted the same..sweet or tangy, maybe savory, unidentifiable in the darkness.

Our hostess seated a couple at our seaside table that I noticed at the pool earlier in the day, and you couldn't help but notice them because they are the most beautiful couple I've ever laid eyes on.  I whispered to Jim that I was convinced they were superstars--perhaps hip hop royalty--but by the time he looked up to confirm that, they were gone.

They were exquisite to look at, even more so when they spoke with beautiful accents(hers: British. His:  Jamaican)

They weren't Beyonce and Jay Z but might as well have been.  Shen is a poet, Sheena owns an Air B&B in London with him.

I could not stop drinking in their beauty, so don't ask too many questions,  They have twin teenaged daughters..One can only imagine what they look like!

The beach party itself offered perfectly fine entertainment, geared toward a younger crowd who like things like corn hole and an open bar.

I liked all the music--the general pulse and beat of the crowd--but the air had a chill and the body had an "I'm tired--leave me alone!" vibe.

So we watched.

We watched a coked-up emcee and somebody dancing with fire.  Dancing with it, swallowing it, sending it flowers the next morning.

The emcee goes on to entice the young drunkards to participate in a game where the winner could collect a prize valued at $100.00.

If it wasn't Gilmore Girl trivia(it wasn't) I wasn't going to leave the comfort of my chair.

The emcee hands out a white balloon to every couple and instructs them to blow it up to a desired size.

He tells the participants and the audience that a prize will be given to the couple that "most creatively" would make the ballon pop, a sound that has scared the living daylights out of me my whole life, worse than opening a can of Pop n Fresh biscuit dough.

Each couple had a minute of two to create a scenario that would end with the popping sound of the balloon.

Most couples would just bring the balloons to the judging station and make fart sounds--not even ones as loud as those I was making from the audience.

I think the winners(I couldn't see very well) were a guy who stuffed a fully inflated balloon under his t-shirt while his wife escorted him to the judging station and then pretended to be his labor coach .

That was clever..creative..but..

Amateurs!

I bet you're all thinking what I WOULD have created in those two minutes while I was sitting in my chair passing gas and passing time, so I'll tell you.

Even 'though there was a definite chill in the air, I would have convinced Jim to take the balloon into the ocean until they were both soaking wet.

I'd have him come out, exhausted and disoriented and clutching the big white balloon.

He would look at me, standing a few feet away, squinting his very tired  eyes and he'd ask:

"Kelly?  Kelly Frears, from Memphis, Tennessee?  After all these years, is it really you?"

Now I know you have to suspend belief to imagine me in this role, since I look like Helen Hunt as much an emaciated coyote does.(oh..wait..)

..and I'd go up to my wet husband and slap him.  Hard, across his sunburned cheek.

"Four years???  Four *%(#*&% years??!!" my character would say, before slapping him again.

"I married someone I don't love and had a daughter I didn't want and don't give me that crap about a downed UPS plane..you JILTED me.  Where the hell were you??!!"

Jim would say, "Kelly..I can explain.."

And then MY character would notice him holding that blown up white balloon, very close to his heart, and she'd say:

"And who the hell is THIS??"

He'd say:  "This is Wilson and it didn't mean anything!  I swear, Kel, Winston doesn't make Passover brisket like you do or make me laugh like you do..Wilson was just..just..just an OUTLET, Kel..and..and you were in MEMPHIS, for God sakes, and we had a little too much to drink because I was in a downed UPS plane in the ocean..and..and..I love YOU, Kelly! Please..we can go to counseling..please.."

I would scream:  "You lying, cheating mother f*ucker!" and I'd violently yank Wilson from his grasp.

I would take Wilson to the judging station, find the sharpest object I could in the sand, and pop the living daylights out of him.

What do you think..would YOU have voted for us?

The blue wave

Day One first  impression:  A mixed bag, starting with the notion that I should have never left the bed I couldn't get out of anyway, and ending on a pleasant note.

The staff here is friendly, but not as friendly as they SHOULD be.

The beautiful tanned people are very attentive when they've got cameras, otherwise, you're kind of on your own when it comes to sinking or swimming.

We had to call twice for a plumber, and twice to get the breakfast tray cleared away. You call the concierge, they tell you to call Room Service.  You call Room Service, they tell you the mailbox is full and cannot accept any new messages.

I wanted to ask for more towels, and an unclogged toilet, and another iced coffee.

(And by then I was resigned to the idea that asking for a portable bidet was off the table)

Jim has little patience for this nonsense, so he sets the tray outside himself, and the room service folks don't come, but Corona DOES, where he figures out how to knock over the creamer, which was way too full in the first place.

The room service guy appears a few seconds later, mad as a wet hen, but you can't cry over spilled cream!  Hey..WE didn't jam up the room service message box, and neither did Corona!

We proceed to the beach and plop ourselves into two suspiciously convenient lounge chairs.  Within minutes, we are swamped with peddlers of cheap jewelry and straw hats for toddlers, and I treated them with just a tad more civility than I treat the telemarketers that bother me daily.

I was finally at the beach, getting that Blue Wave fix like I was an informed voter in November, when a guy comes over and asks us what ship we were on.  I was about to attack him when a Sandals staffer told us that we were indeed pirating chairs that didn't belong to us.

We leave and I go to the pool where I meet Mary from DC.  We're talking for less than a minute when Jim walks by with his snorkeling gear and she tells him her name and home town and adds:  "Don't hold that against me"

How the hell did she read his political posts on Facebook BEFORE meeting him?  Or me?

A well tanned photographer approaches Mary and I, needing our NAMES and ROOM NUMBERS for the water aerobics class.

I never had to this that at any other resort! What's next..my password or PIN number?

First of all, I NEVER remember my room number, and secondly, I ALWAYS cheat in this class, pretending I'm doing those weird twisty water things when I'm basically just trying to keep the sun out of my eyes.

So being the cheater I am, I sign my name as Felicity Huffman.

Yet another gorgeous man with a camera tried to snap close ups..of me in a dumb hat and a bathing suit..but he didn't get very far.

The instructor then ordered us to sit on the steps in the shallow end, shoulder to shoulder, waving like he's Bert Parks and we're posing for  some misogynistic photo op that should have died in 1966.

You can probably find this photo on Instagram if that's your thing.

Jim returns from snorkeling, eager for such at a place called Barefoot by the Sea, which is as nice as it sounds.

We walk by a bunch of drunks playing corn hole, the dirtiest sounded g-rated game on the planet.

Jim doesn't drink as much as these fools, but he DID just ring the bell, claiming his key didn't work.  I didn't answer because he rang the bell of our neighbor, who answered dressed in only a towel.

Jim likes his mai tais at the swim-up bar, I like my virgin pina coladas, but I do give him the cherry, and yeah, I heard what I just said.

How old am I that I use the word "cherry" in that context?

We discovered a beautiful roped off area, free of seaweed and drunks and stray cats, and befriend a young couple who live in a town with the exact same name as ours, only theirs is in Maryland.

Off to a beach barbecue but I will leave you loyal readers with news you've been waiting to hear all day:

I got my step stool!  I can get into bed!

..and have sweet dreams about Corona, the cream-stealing cat

“Cats!” The vacation

Good morning, sunshine!

A little blogging before beach, a little blogging before it becomes a blag(my portmanteau for blog and brag, although what's to brag about?  That I finally figured out how to get into a bed that's higher than Snoop Dog?)

Nope..not going turn into a BUB(Brutally Untalented Blogger)

There's enough of them all over the internet, but they're not all wasting THEIR vacation days making up unnecessary acronyms.

First impressions of our first night in Antigua:

Lots of twits. Lots of Brits. Lots of weirdly-placed fire pits.

(There was a fire pit every few feet..we'd pass by and hear random words from conversations among strangers like "universal health care!" and "France is going to close the Louvre!")

The layout  and architecture is so strange, like one of those dreams a person has about returning to their bunk at summer camp and opening  the moth-covered screen door to a fully-functioning car wash, or you're in  your elementary school and the coat room becomes a mosque.)

We saw bungalows, then hotel rooms, then buildings we couldn't identify, then structures that we were sure had the butlers and plunge pools we read about but didn't get, then older, lived-in buildings, then a bright out-of-place neon sign screaming the name of this resort like we were in Vegas...it was all so..weird.  But we didn't see the beach yet, so as always, I'm going to tell you not to listen to a word I've written. I am cranky and jet lagged.

We saw beautiful brown skinned people(the staff) and less beautiful inked people. (The guests)

We saw tats. Lots of tats. And lots of cats.

So many cats..dramatical cats. Fanatical cats. Cynical cats. Rabbinical cats. Cats with hats and cats with tats.

One showed up on our balcony, demanding the residue from my leftover Cheerios.  I told Jim to ignore the little bugger, but Jim has a weak spot for animals.  I can't use the excuse that I'm allergic to cats--I'm not--I've just never been a fan.

But Jim fell in love with this little Cheerios guy and because he's as twisted as I am, (which is why we're still married ) he decided to call him "Corona."

I suspect he'll be back..

(And that's my last joke about disease, even if this blog goes..uh..viral)

You know how when you get a 4:30 AM airport pickup, you look forward to your first night of good sleep?

As aforementioned, the mattress was so high that it might as well have been attached to the ceiling. I had to grab onto the bedding like I was Shelley Winters scaling a Christmas tree in the upended USS Poseidon,  When I finally got up, I was  sweaty and panting and exhausted, and I told Jim I was not going to move until the sun came out unless I sprouted another four inches overnight.

But then I had a nature's call..and it was 2:00 AM..and..I could not get back into the bed!  I told Jim I was going to sleep on a pool-side lounge, which meant we wouldn't have to reserve it at 7:00 AM with a tube of expired sunscreen, but he instructed me to haul myself up and shimmy in butt first.

which worked...until the act of shimmying set off approximately eight minutes of agony via those Charley horses that I get all the time from..shimmying.

The cure for a Charley horse is, of course, to walk it off until the pain subsides and then shimmy back into bed until another one is set off.

It was a vicious cycle but yes, I finally  got some quality sleep, thanks for asking.

And I called to order a step stool before making a reservation in the resort's most popular restaurant.

I don't think housekeeping is going to show, because they didn't show for the forty-five minutes our toilet was clogged because we're too dumb to work the automated Do Not Disturb sign.

I will have fun, I promise.

Complaining is fun.

Bitching is my forte.

I am Kvetching Karen, damn it!

And I'm going to relax with my Kindle in a few moments, and worry about what Jim is going to encounter on his snorkeling expedition.

Ugh..how are you folks still putting up with me?

Getting my sandals wet

Ha!

 Gotcha!

And here you're thinking it's my BIRTHDAY that's celebrated for a whole month.

Guess again.

We're on the second leg of our thirtieth anniversary celebration, this time in Antigua, with its beautiful BLUE waters and with a sciatica-free leg. (so far)

We started off the day with an airport processional, and yes, I'm still in THAT phase, missing my Mom, thinking of walking down the aisle to that beautiful John Barry score.

Only I suddenly realized I was instructed to walk side by side with Jim so dogs could sniff us out.

Hey, I liked the idea that I didn't have to remove shoes in the germy Newark airport, but I was afraid the dogs would sniff SOMETHING..

That same something that makes Luke a humping lunatic every night.

The last time we were in Sandals was our honeymoon in Jamaica in 1989.

And if you guessed that the one thing I forgot to pack to Sandals is a pair of Sandals, you'd be guessing correctly.

(It could have been worse if I made the same mistake at a resort called "Tweezers")

We have our own pool!

(I have MY own pool..Jim's is in the back, and yes, I stole that line that James Caan said to Marsha Mason in "Chapter Two"..wanna make something of it?)
